Women and the criminal justice system: steps towards change

26 Oct 2023 @ 19:30 - 21:00 AEDT

Humanists Victoria Public Presentation

(hybrid meeting)

In 2016 Elena Pappas and Jill Prior founded Law and Advocacy for Women (LACW), the first women’s legal service in Victoria.
They support women with legal advocacy, while the social workers and case managers on their team are able to assist with housing, trauma counselling and drug and alcohol care.
Many women are primary care-givers, and domestic violence is far too often part of the picture that leads to offending. The wrap-around services on offer at LACW aim to forge pathways out of the justice system.

Elena Pappas, BA, LLB (hons), LLM, is Chief Executive Officer at LACW. She has worked at the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service as a senior lawyer in the Criminal Law team. Prior to that, she was an associate in the Workplace Relations team of a highly regarded private law firm in Melbourne and has worked as a volunteer with the Mental Health Legal Centre, Asylum Seeker Resource Centre and Fitzroy Legal Service.

Humanists Victoria is proud to be able to support the work of LACW.
