Religious Trauma: The Long Journey of Leaving Religion

28 Apr 2022 @ 19:30 - 21:00 AEST

HV public presentation

Caroline Winzenried is a counsellor who specialises in religious trauma. She takes an existential-humanistic approach in supporting clients as they process their experiences and find a way forwards that feels authentic for them.

The intense process of re-examining one’s life after leaving a religion often profoundly alters a person’s self-concept and ideas about the world. In recent years, the term ‘religious trauma’ has been used to describe the grief, shame, anxiety and interpersonal challenges that often arise when long-held beliefs are re-evaluated and relationships are renegotiated. Caroline will discuss common presentations of religious trauma and the importance of recognising its impact.
