Mr Abdul Baig is chairperson of RISE: Refugee Survivors and Ex-Detainees – a self-governing refugee welfare agency run by survivors and ex-detainees.
Humanists Victoria has long deplored the government’s treatment of asylum seekers and refugees, and this year granted ten thousand dollars to RISE for a two-year project to increase the capacity of RISE Advocacy Services.
Abdul will give an overview of the work of RISE, the impact of its advocacy and casework, and talk about plans for the future. Born in Pakistan, he trained as a civil engineer before coming to Australia in 1998 as a refugee. He was forcibly detained for three years and has been speaking out against mandatory detention for over 20 years.
