Tiffany Overall is Advocacy and Human Rights Officer at Youthlaw. She is also founder and co-convener of Smart Justice for Young People (SJ4YP), a coalition of over 50 organisations from the youth, legal and community sectors, which was established in 2011.
The conduct of youth detention in Victoria needs some humane reform. The community has to confront amd counter the drivers of youth offending, and the over-representation of Indigenous youth and those with a multicultural background must be brought to an end.
Leading up to the Victorian State election in November 2022, SJ4YP will produce and promote its policy platform amongst the community, media and decision makers. Policy priorities will include a commitment to community-led initiatives to tackle disadvantage, to raise the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to at least 14, and to promote humane treatment in youth detention facilities.
