Get Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable
9 Jul 2020 @ 19:00 - 20:00 AEST
FreeJoin fellow humanists to discuss how we can ‘get comfortable with being uncomfortable’.
Human beings tend to find uncertainty a very uncomfortable space to be! As humanists, we frequently find ourselves in that uncomfortable space. Many turn to religion and the supernatural to provide them with certainty. But we know there is much about which we can’t be certain in this vast universe. Often we seem to find more questions than answers, as we explore what it means to live a humanist life.
What can help us sit comfortably with this uncertainty? And how can we also become more comfortable with speaking up – perhaps using questions rather than the answers others may ask of us – to make this world a better place?
As an additional trigger for our discussion, we’ll share an uplifting 10-minute Ted talk from Luvvie Ajayi, a speaker and digital strategist who ‘thrives at the intersection of comedy, technology and activism’. She argues that ‘being yourself can be a revolutionary act’ and in a world that ‘wants us to whisper’, we can ‘choose to shout’.
