Climate Action and Social Justice: Turn Off the Gas
25 Nov 2021 @ 20:00 - 21:30 AEDT
HV Public Presentation via Zoom
Gas is now a hot-button issue for the Victorian Government. Dr Jim Crosthwaite will expose the narratives that promote risks to peak winter energy supply and the need for new gas pipelines and infrastructure. While the Government is intent on getting Victoria off fossil gas, i.e. methane, the big questions are how quickly can that happen, what are the climate impacts, and who will be affected by the policy choices. Jim will identify limitations in the gas market, commercial pressures and governance inertia. He will also emphasise the critical timing of current planning processes within the Victorian government.
Jim trained in agricultural economics and worked for the Victorian Government for 24 years on the economic and social dimensions of biodiversity planning. He also managed the Conservation Management Network for many years. These days he is a busy climate activist and also a teacher of Alexander Technique. He is a member of Humanists Victoria.
The talk will be preceded by the 60th Annual General Meeting, beginning at 7.30 pm.
